Block Waterproofing

Several types of concrete masonry units (CMU or block) are available on the market. One type is a smooth-face block, a lower-quality option typically used as a backer block behind the brick facade of a building. Due to its lower quality, we recommend treating it with an elastomeric waterproofing paint. These paints come in various colors and textures to provide additional protection. Transparent waterproofing materials can also be used on smooth-face blocks, but due to their porous nature, they would need to be treated frequently, making them less cost-effective.

Another type of CMU is the split-face block, which is a higher-quality option than a smooth-face block. Although split-face block comes in different grades, we recommend treating it every 5-10 years. The length of time between treatments will depend on factors such as the grade of the block, weathering conditions, and the materials used. Factors such as where it is located, and environmental conditions like sun exposure, rainfall, and similar conditions will affect the lifetime of the treatment. Split-face blocks can be treated with materials that will not alter the block's appearance. It can also be treated with a masonry waterproofing paint like the one below.
